Local Government Units Across Cebu Mobilize Relief Efforts and Cash Aid for Mindanao Earthquake Victims

In a powerful demonstration of inter-regional solidarity, local government units across Cebu have mobilized significant relief efforts to assist communities devastated by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Mindanao on June 8, 2026[citation:5]. The powerful quake caused deaths, injuries, displacement, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, prompting an immediate humanitarian response from Cebu’s provincial and city governments. The Cebu Provincial Government dispatched two wing van trucks carrying vital relief supplies to Sarangani Province on Friday, June 12, as part of its comprehensive humanitarian response to the disaster[citation:5]. According to the Capitol Public Information Office, the shipment included 500 family food packs, 500 bottles of mineral water, 500 hygiene kits, 500 sleeping kits, and 432 boxes of ready-to-eat meals[citation:5]. In addition to these in-kind donations, Governor Pamela Baricuatro announced that Cebu Province would provide PHP 10 million in financial assistance to General Santos City, one of the areas heavily affected by the earthquake[citation:5]. The Cebu City Government also prepared a week-long donation drive for affected families, with Mayor Nestor Archival encouraging residents to donate water, rice, butane canisters, blankets, toiletries, and tarpaulins for communities facing shortages of basic necessities[citation:5]. The Cebu City Council approved a resolution authorizing the release of PHP 5 million in financial aid to General Santos City, sourced from the city’s Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation funds[citation:5]. In a similar effort, Mandaue City announced it would provide PHP 1 million in financial assistance to General Santos City as part of its response to the earthquake, with officials stating the aid was intended as a gesture of solidarity with the city that had previously extended support to Mandaue following Cebu’s magnitude 6.9 earthquake on September 30, 2025[citation:5]. Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King-Chan coordinated with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the Office of Civil Defense Region 7, and other concerned agencies to monitor developments in the affected areas, activating five trained personnel for possible deployment to southern Mindanao as part of an Incident Management Team augmentation[citation:5]. The coordinated response from Cebu’s local governments demonstrates the province’s commitment to disaster preparedness and its willingness to extend assistance beyond its borders during times of crisis.
